New Exhibition for local Sheffield artist Joyce Spurr

Saturday, 13 November 2021
12.00 – 14.30
Todwick Village Hall

Joyce Spurr

Free entry – come and have a glass of wine while you choose your pictures…

100 years old Sheffield artist Joyce Spurr has decided to put up for sale her life-long collection of her own paintings that will be on display from 12 noon – 2.30 pm, Saturday, 13 November 2021, in Todwick Village Hall. Some paintings have been sold at previous exhibitions. There were over 190 framed paintings covering a range of interesting subjects – Sheffield urban and industrial scenes, locations around the UK and Europe – such as Andalusia, Scotland, Welsh coast, nudes in various poses. There is also a collection of unframed pieces of art. Also on display is a new collection of smaller paintings taken from Joyce’s sketch books that have been framed to show off the variety and range of subjects. All three collections are offered at extremely attractive prices, range from £3 because Joyce would like others to enjoy her pictures and passion for art. These pictures would make really unusual 2021 Christmas or birthday gifts for people.

The funds raised from these exhibitions go to The Joyce Spurr Bursary Travel Fund that was established in 2019 to support the next generation of artists currently studying art at the Sheffield Hallam University and will help current students attend art exhibitions across the UK to inspire and develop their own practice and aspirations.

Here is your chance to own a local artist’s delightful piece of art at very attractive prices.

Joyce uses watercolours, acrylic, oil, pastels, polymer and ink in her works of art. As well as having a large studio Joyce had her own workshop in which she made her own frames which complement the actual pictures.

During her working life Joyce was Deputy Head of Sheffield City Libraries, Commerce, Science and Technology Department and in 1958 became Head of Information Services at the United Steel Companies Ltd Research and Development Department, Swinden Laboratories, Moorgate, Rotherham until her retirement in 1986. She was on duty at the Sheffield City Libraries at the time of the Sheffield Blitz and later painted a picture of a burning tram on the Moor. The picture is now in the Sheffield Museums collection as are some of her other paintings showing Sheffield Industrial scenes. Joyce’s story appears in Neil Anderson’s book entitled The Forgotten Blitz (chapter 12). Joyce also served for four years during World War II with the British Army in Egypt as a wireless operator sending messages to Bletchley Park in the UK.
