Welcome to the Winter 2010 edition of your Todwick Informer!

Todwick Parish Council wishes a Very Merry Christmas to all readers and a Safe, Healthy and Happy New Year

Stephen R. Hill, Chairman, Todwick Parish Council writes:

It gives me much pleasure, to write on behalf of the Parish Council a seasonal message for everyone in the village.

The Parish Council is the Village's link to Rotherham MBC with a constant two-way flow of information on all matters concerning us. As always we have to thank our Clerk Rod Walker, whose limitless knowledge of Rotherham MBC's departments and responsibilities gets things done for us.

We have a Village plan from the 2004 which we are currently revising. We hope to hear from villagers with suggestions as to further items to include. See insert in this Informer.

This year has seen more activity on the proposed A57 improvement. We secured a Public Enquiry but along came the cuts in Government spending. The scheme is temporarily shelved. The Final decision is due in January 2011

We continue working towards the provision of a new Sports Pavilion to cover various activities. In the meantime the existing Football pavilion has been revamped and the facilities greatly improved. We have an excellent new Children's play area by the entrance to the recreation ground on Goosecarr Lane, 100% funded by Grant aid.

We continue to make strenuous efforts regarding the flooding, with an improved maintenance programme. We hope to carry out further effective measures ourselves. Particularly sad, is the loss of our busy Post Office. I could mention lots more but if you are able, do look at Todwick's village Website www.todwick.org.uk for much more information about what is happening in your village.

We hope that everyone thoroughly enjoys living in the village and that we can continue to improve it and its facilities for you.

It only remains for me, on behalf of the Parish Council and its helpers, to wish everyone, A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR

The 2011 Census is coming

The census has collected information about the population every ten years since 1801 (except in 1941). The next census in England and Wales is on March 27th 2011.

The census tells us how many people live where and the types of people they are (young, old, married, single). This means decisions, like working out who needs facilities in the future, are focused on accurate, relevant details.

Millions of pounds shared out

The Department of Communities and Local Government and the Department of Health allocate money to local and health authorities. Census statistics feed into thatprocess, which is why you need to be counted to make sure that your community is properly represented in the decision-making process.

Your community and family benefit

You will need to complete and return the Census form so that the services and facilities your community / family uses can be identified. These services include schools, hospitals and emergency services, Census statistics help work out the amount of funding allocated to facilities in communities.

Parish Council Matters Briefly

Todwick Parish Plan is being updated

It was created in the mid 2000s. Please see the insert in this Informer that gives more details. You are being urged to fill in the Questionnaire when it arrives at your house early in January 2011. Some suggested topic areas were received at the Todwick Fun Day and Arts, Gardens & Historic events and these will be considered for inclusion in the questionnaire. Contact Councillor Jean Leah Tel: 771082 if you wish to suggest further topics.

Road Lighting on the A57

The road lighting on A57 just before you turn left into Goosecarr Lane has been reinstated in the early part of November. The results of pressure from the TPC and some Todwick residents to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC).

Reduction in Precept

Todwick Parish Council calculates an amount of money needed to carry out work and other activities during the year. This is then collected by RMBC and returned to the TPC. For the coming year 2011/2012 there will be a slight reduction it will be £34,400, previously £35,000. This does not include any Grant aided activities etc that TPC applies for during the year to help fund other projects.

Red Telephone Box Book Swop

The Parish Council has acquired the Red Telephone Box on Goosecarr Lane and we are planning to turn it into a Book Swop. The Box needs a little bit of TLC and shelving out before we can get everything underway but we are hoping to make a start with the Book Swop quite soon. Please watch out for further announcements. Any queries? Please have a word with Councillor Eileen Northall on 01909 770050.

TPC Meetings

Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month, except August, in the Village Hall commencing at 7 pm. The open session, where Todwick residents can attend and raise local issues or ask questions, commences at 8 pm. Minutes of meetings appear a few days after the meetings on www.todwick.org.uk website.

TPC donating an annual prize to Wales High School

An annual prize of £100 to a deserving pupil of the school who meets the TPC's criteria for the award. Councillor Brian White will represent Todwick Parish Council at the presentation.

Todwick Neighbourhood Watch sends out a timely Christmas warning

Christmas present buying time is here... So just a few timely reminders... When you have been to the shops, always put Christmas presents out of sight - we suggest in the boot of the car. Don't leave anything on display in your car that could attract the attention of a thief. Bags, envelopes, parcels, clothes... You may know the object is not important - the thief does not know that!

Keep your wallet or bag secure at all times. Pickpockets are around looking for easy pickings. Often it is within a crowded or busy situation. You are distracted by the goods on display in a shop window. Your mind is now on a special present... Don't become a victim of the pickpocket. And when you get home, ensure that presents are hidden from view. Simple ideas - easy to do. So make it hard for the thief not to have easy pickings.

What is going on? Forthcoming winter events in Todwick...

At the Village Hall

This year's Christmas Fayre will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday, 27 November 2010 between 1.30 pm and 4.00 pm when young and old will have an opportunity to meet Father Christmas in his Grotto. Father Christmas will be arriving at 1.45 pm. The Management Committee is grateful to all local companies and individuals for their kind donations of prizes and to all those who have purchased raffle tickets so far. Many seasonal prizes will be on offer so if you've still not purchased yours there is still time as raffle tickets will be on sale right up to, during the Fayre and until just before 4.00 pm on the day. So please come and join us and get your Christmas preparations off to a good start!

You may have noticed that the wall between the Village Hall drive and the school is being renovated. The front section has been replaced by fencing so that exiting car drivers can see toddlers coming along the pavement and the old stone wall has been shot-blast, cleaned and is now being re-pointed. This very old wall is almost part of our heritage and this renovation will hopefully give it a new lease of life for many years to come. Our thanks go to the Parish Council for their financial support with this project.

The winter months can sometimes be particularly quite dreary so why not join one of a number of activities on offer - for adults activities range for example from Tracing your Family Tree (Tuesday evenings) to Pilates (Thursday evenings) or for our younger children - Street Dance (Monday tea-time) / Toddlers (Tuesday mornings) / "Music Bugs" pre-school music dance (Thursday mornings) / "Zumba 4 Kids" (Saturday mornings).

Full details of all activities running in the Village Hall can be found on village notice boards or by visiting the Village Hall website - www.todwickvillagehall.co.uk and on the Todwick website www.todwick.org.uk

The Trustees and Management Committee express sincere thanks for the support given to the Village Hall throughout the year and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2011. Season's Greetings to one and all!
