Todwick Parish Council
No. 58
November 2001

TRAFFIC CALMING IN THE VILLAGE - This has now been completed having taken nine weeks instead of the expected six. The reactions of residents seem to be mixed - some are very unhappy while others are pleased with the scheme and the general slowing down of most traffic through the village. It is too early at present to assess the feelings of the majority - at the October Parish Council one resident attended the Open Session to complain bitterly, while in correspondence a letter was read from another resident asking for an additional 'hump' on The Meadows! There has been some delay in the pedestrian crossing becoming operational until the completion of electrical works by Yorkshire Electricity. It will be interesting to see how much use is made of it other than by schoolchildren - older residents may be reluctant to make such a long detour to cross Kiveton Lane and then have to cross The Pastures to reach the shops.

DUMPIT SITES - From 17 September Rotherham Borough Council has introduced barriers to prevent the misuse of these sites, which have been provided to receive household waste only, by commercial organisations. While this has been welcomed by many local residents it has caused problems for owners of 4x4 vehicles which are too high for the barrier and those with small vans or trailers who now have to apply for an Access Permit to allow tipping at the appropriate site. In the case of vehicles over 1.8m (6ft) this means a long journey to the Carr Hill Site. The telephone no. for permits is 01709 363030. Concern at these new regulations has been expressed not only in Todwick but in neighbouring villages - apart from anything else there is a fear that they will result in an increase in fly tipping. If you observe an incident of fly tipping please report it to Rotherham's Environmental Wardens on 01709 823172. It is understood that the Borough Council is monitoring the new system and in due course will consider the problems experienced together with any suggestions made by the public and organisations such as Parish Councils.

DOG EXCREMENT BINS - Following the introduction of the new 'poop-scoop laws' reported in the last issue of The Informer the Parish Council is investigating the possibility of providing a small number of bins in locations around the village, which would be emptied regularly by the Borough Council, to encourage owners to clean up after their dogs - if they don't already do so. Cost is likely to be the deciding factor.

COMMUNITY SKIPS - The next dates for Skips to be provided in Todwick are Sundays 6 January and 3 March 2002. They will be on the Recreation Ground from 9.00a m to 2.30pm on each day.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS - Forthcoming dates are 27 November and 18 December 2001, and 29 January and 26 February 2002 - at 7.30pm in the Village Hall (Open Session at 8.30pm).

CHRISTMAS FAYRE - This will be held on Saturday 1st December and as usual will be opened by Father Christmas at 2.00 pm. He will then be in his Grotto to meet the children. The various village organisations will all be taking part and running stalls, etc. Admission is 30p with children under 12 free. Tickets for the Grand Raffle will be on sale on the day but sellers are already going round the village - please support them and the Fayre as this is the only fundraising event held in support of the Hall during the year.

THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE - Elected at the Annual Meeting in October were:
Chairman: Revd David Bliss; Vice-Chairman: Debbie Fletcher (Parent & Toddler Group); Secretary: Jill Wild; Treasurer: Margaret Grayson. All correspondence should be addressed to the Secretary at 12 Manor Way (tel: 770105).

REFURBISHMENT - By the time you read this an application may already have been sent to the Lottery Commission for the necessary funding - at the time of preparing The Informer all that was awaited was the Quantity Surveyor's report. The Parish Council has also a sum put aside to contribute towards the cost, possibly as match funding. It is hoped to see some progress in 2002!
